Google makes love to Flex with its SearchMash application

Google rolled out the Flex version of its SearchMash, which was already mentioned not only by Adobeans (Ryan Stewart, Mike Potter, James Ward) but by so popular TechCrunch too. The good recognition of Flash Platform opportunities.

I’m thinking about motivation behind Google’s playing with Flex. The strong points of Flex technology (SearchMash is developed in) is big set of ready-to-use UI components (=fast application prototyping), high debugging capabilities, compile-time error checking, strong variable typing and overall proximity of ActionScript3 language to the latest ECMAScript implementation, which brings AS3 far towards the best practices of architecture and coding. Javascript2 will have set of new features in future, while many of them are already well-implemented in AS3, today. So, making AS3 application, Google might foresees the upcoming JS2 in Firefox 3/4.

Moreover, Tamarin project brings both AS and JS languages even closer together, so implementing SearchMash today in AS3/Flash might make future migration to the Javascript3 easier.

AIRApps.net became O2Apps.com. Wish them a bit of traffic!

The contest for the best new name for AIRApps is finished. Congrats to the Mr. Mike Hays of SOHOS Network ??” he got the Adobe CS3 Master Collection as a prize! He suggested the best new name which is O2apps.com (I shouldn’t have propose O2Apps.net! ;-) )

So, AIRApps.net is now O2Apps.com. Go to the new domain, feel comfortable: all your credentials and data are kept the same excluding the domain name. The site design is updated: it was red with bit of jpeg artifacts, it is blue and clear now.

I wonder how easy they transfered the whole big and complex site to the new domain. This means that system design was close to perfect, right?

Trying the new Bee desktop blog editor build on AIR / HTML / Javascript

Bee? is a Desktop blog editor built on? AIR / HTML / Javascript. It integrates WordPress, Flickr and more. Uses a number of JavaScript frameworks: Prototype, script.aculo.us, Spry, TinyMCE, and Walter Zorn’s Tooltips for Javascript.
The best thing about Bee — it is MUCH FASTER than built-in Wordpres editor. And Bee Rich HTML Editor seems to have all the features I missed.
Try it:? Download Bee.air. Source code available, too.
Pressing “Preview”… looks good. Publish!

DoFollow: no more nofollow entropy at Flash-Ripper.com

I’ve just have updated my beloved WordPress engine with DoFollow plug-in. What it does, is brings us to the blogging culture where SEO won’t be a swear word anymore and people will be embarrassing each other with comments kindly. So does this blog now.

Having “NoFollow” attribute turned on the comment links in my blog didn’t decreased the spam activity at all (as Google supposed it to do when ‘nofollow’ was introduced). And won’t decrease spamcomments in the future. The only way to stop spam is: 1) Delete blog 3) Delete the email box and 3) Disconnect from the web (I’m kidding). Well, good spam protection plug-in will do the job, as Akismet does for now. So why to have “nofollow” turned on, it is just disrupting the web structure! I want my commenters to be linked back, so they are starting from right now.

Adobe Flex Builder Alpha for Linux

Now I’m seriously thinking about switching completely to Linux. Adobe just has released an Alpha build of the Flash Builder for Linux.

Could you please recommend me a good Linux to start from? I’ve heard a lot of kind words about Ubuntu, as of the easiest Linux for the newbies like me. Maybe there’s a better Linux releases?

Away3D, an innovative Flash 3D engine comes from Kiev, Ukraine

Originally derived from Papervision3D, this engine has been almost completely rewritten, as his author Alexander Zadorozhny told me and other Ukrainian Flash Platform developers during our most recent meeting in the Kiev, Ukraine (that’s how UPFUG met for the first time). Alex demonstrated really cool demo of 3D editor built on top of the Away3D. Real environment maps does render pretty fast. True 3D mesh editing and objects transformations reminded me those beloved Maya tools. While this editor itself isn’t public at the moment due to customer’s request, there’s a bunch of Away3D tech demos available and Away3D engine itself is opensource: see the new Away3D project home page at the Google Code.

In the Engine Overview Demo the core features are shown, such as Texture projection, Mesh morphing, White lighting, Color lighting, Mesh morphing, Z ordering, Skybox, Perspective texturing, Level of details, Sprites, Meshes, Drawing, Mouse events, Bezier extrusion, wire primitives, Occlusion culling, Movie texturing, Transforms and Primitives.

Some unique features of Away3D were so well accepted by developers of the PV3D that Papervision3D has merged them back as official PV3D blog says. These features will be included in Papervision3D 2.0 release. There’s an Away3d Architecture Overview available: all about engine main concepts.

Read the Away3D FAQ and visit its original home page ??” its worthy.
